| What do
we know about a low-saturated fat diet supplemented with omega-3
fatty acids (fish oil) in MS? (A diet similar to "the Swank
diet".) Most studies looking at this issue have found an association between the development of MS and a high saturated fat diet. But other studies have found no such association. Studies have demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids (found in high concentration in fish oil) alter immune function in humans in a manner believed to be beneficial in MS, i.e. through suppression of inflammation. A number of large double-blinded placebo controlled trials of "healthy oils" have found weak evidence in favor of "healthy oils" in MS versus placebo. A large, uncontrolled study by Dr. Roy Swank over a 25-year period appeared to demonstrate an impact on disability progression in those adhering to a low-saturated fat diet supplemented with fish oil. A small (16 patients) uncontrolled trial of low fat diet supplemented with fish oil lasting two years found significant benefit on relapse rate and mean EDSS scores relative to the pre-study rate. A small, randomized, controlled trial (30 people) found that a low saturated fat diet supplemented with 6 g of fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) reduced the amount of disability (by almost 1 EDSS point) over a 1 year period versus a different "heart healthy" diet supplemented with 6 g of olive oil. The diet altered certain immune system factors believed to have a positive impact on MS. Low-saturated fat diet by itself has never been tested in a controlled, randomized trial. Whatever effect was seen in this clinical trial may be entirely due to the "healthy oils". |
