Zinc is critical for the formation and activity of many enzymes and cells that play a role in the maintenance of a healthy immune system and has been used in the medical world for centuries.* In the 1800s, surgeons used zinc as an antiseptic/antibiotic after surgery because of its amazing support of body repair.*

Because zinc naturally possesses antibacterial and anti-viral properties and is found in all the body fluids, including that of the eyes, lungs, nose, urine, and saliva, proper zinc levels work with the immune system in the defense of the body.* Because zinc is found in the body fluids, proper levels of zinc tend to decrease body odor, including foot odor, and promote the health of the throat with every swallow.* The body loses large amounts of zinc during perspiration. Therefore, athletes need to replace zinc regularly.*

Hunger is regulated by zinc and is the result of the body demanding nutrition.* Zinc is important in metabolizing proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.* Tests show that zinc deficiencies increase the need for food by 50% over subjects who had proper zinc levels. Therefore, a person who is zinc deficient could consume up to 50% more food than is necessary, causing an undesirable increase in carbohydrates and weight increase due to overeating.* Zinc is also involved in the process of gluconeogenesis, which is the formation of glucose from noncarbohydrates, such as protein or fat.*

Zinc is effective in hormone production and supports a healthy sex drive.* Zinc promotes healthy prostate function and is important for the proper maintenance of the male reproductive system. It also supports the synthesis of testosterone and other male hormones.*
