FLORA FIVE
“Scientists continue to investigate the
theory that most diseases begin in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the
prime area of absorption and utilization of ingested compounds into the
bloodstream and through other areas of the body. A well-functioning gut is
one that is abundant with the indigenous beneficial bacterial that act as
soldiers in the digestive tract, killing off offensive invaders that seek
to gain hold, populate and wreak either slow or fast damage on the
body”, Lisa Schonfield, Nutritional
Outlook, November/December 2004.
According to the 2003 Gallup Study on Vitamin Use in the
United States, a scant 4% of adults were aware of probiotics, found
naturally occurring in yogurts and other pure dairy sources. The awareness
of all-natural probiotics has become much more prominent in nutrition.
Intestinal health is often taken for granted until there is “a
problem.” The body is much better prepared to offer immune response when
the digestive tract is strong and maintaining healthy levels of friendly
bacteria/flora. Probiotics help regulate the microflora colonies
throughout the entire intestinal tract.

- Flora Five offers you
Bifidobacterium Lactis, which is isolated from a Kefir culture
, and has been reported to support the
entire digestive system.

The
Benefits Of Friendly Bacteria
The bacteria that live in the intestines make up a very large and
diverse population. The numbers of each kind of bacteria change
depending on one's age, diet, health status, and use of drugs and
supplements. When the overall flora of the intestines is drastically
changed and the amount of friendly bacteria reduced, major health
consequences may occur.* Probiotics are organisms that help optimize
the health of the human digestive tract and immune system.*
Probiotic bacteria favorably alter the intestinal microflora
balance, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, promote healthy
digestion and nutrient absorption, promote immune function, and
increase the body’s resistance to infection.* Probiotic bacteria
also produce substances called bacteriocins, which act as natural
antibiotics. Individuals with flourishing intestinal colonies of
beneficial bacteria are better equipped to fight the growth of
harmful bacteria.* Probiotics are especially important for people
who have intestinal challenges or treatments that may alter the
intestinal flora.*
The
Probiotic Component
The specific strains of bacteria selected for Living Health were
carefully chosen, based upon research and scientific reasoning. It
includes:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Enterococcus faecium
- Bifidobacterium bifidum
- Lactobacillus casei
Lactobacillus
Acidophilus
The Lactobacillus genus has truly gained attention since the work of
Nobel Prize-winner Metchnikoff in the early 1900s. Specifically,
acidophilus is the most researched bacterium regarding bacterial use
for the promotion of human health. Metchnikoff's work demonstrated
that humans are dependent on the quantity and function of
acidophilus for promoting intestinal health and that intestinal
health affects the health of the whole body. This species of
Lactobacillus is documented to have high implant levels in the
intestinal tract. During its growth phase, it produces DL-lactic
acid and the enzyme amylase (a carbohydrate-digesting enzyme) for
proper digestion. The Lactobacillus are largely responsible for the
final stages of lactose fermentation. L. acidophilus is also
particularly important in the promotion of health in the context of
antibiotic-induced diarrhea, yeast overgrowth, and urinary tract
challenges.* L. acidophilus is also normally present in the vaginal
flora and helps to keep the growth of Candida (yeast) and other
bacteria in check.*
Enterococcus
Faecium
This intestinal bacteria is present in large numbers in the adult
colon. This is a fiber-loving bacterium with similar attributes to
Lactobacillus casei. It appears to feed primarily on plant material
and may be directly involved in the liberation and fermentation of
plant lignins. Lignins are a group of compounds that have been
documented as having powerful antioxidant activities.* E. faecium
also is important in the breakdown and degradation of unusable
components of the digestive process. As such, it’s one of the main
bacterium that are important in the formation of fecal matter and is
found in high concentration in feces.
Bifidobacterium
Bifidum
The intestinal flora of the newborn becomes established through
bacterium found in breast milk. This Bifidobacterium species is the
main bacteria responsible for this colonization. Because of this
fact, newborns must have it to protect their bodies from Candida
overgrowth. In adults, this species is highly susceptible to
environmentally induced stress and, therefore, the normal intestinal
flora can be undesirably modified.
Lactobacillus
Casei
This species of Lactobacillus is documented to have a wide pH and
temperature range and complements the growth of Lactobacillus
acidophilus. It also produces DL-lactic acid and amylase to aid in
digestion. Lactobacillus casei has also been demonstrated to produce
natural substances, called bacteriocins, which inhibit the growth of
various harmful bacteria.*
- Flora Five also gives you Lactobacillus
rhamnosus and Lactobacillus acidophilus which are two of the
most studied probiotics studied offering significant support of
healthy levels of bacteria in the digestive tract and overall
well-being.
- Flora Five includes Bifidobacteriaum
longum which is of human origin. It is very resistant to gastric
acidity and seems to be a good modulator of the immune system.

Adults: 1-3 capsules daily.
